So I'm sitting here reading LJ, with the window open because it's a hot night, and something bounces off the screen (the window screen, not the computer) a couple of feet away from my head. Whoa! It's a hummingbird moth. Here's a photo.

Isn't it gorgeous? I hatched one out once. Its larval form is that humongous green caterpillar that chomps on your tomato plants. I moved it around so it didn't do any important damage to the plant and, luckily, I was there when it crawled down and started digging in the dirt. I put it into a dirt-filled jar. After a few days I dug it out gently and looked at the cool chrysalis. Then I reburied it and kept it (with holes in the jar lid, yes) until it hatched out into a lovely moth that could be mistaken for a hummingbird if it's after dark (which is when they're active) and you can't find your glasses.

I haven't seen one of those in years. Yay for nature!

I'm going to bed now. Goodnight :)

Here I started the darn meme and everyone is doing it but me!

Easter Sunday: My hubby took the day off. I'd stayed up too late, as usual, but I staggered into the kitchen at about four (yeah, that's PM) to find him fixing a lovely dinner of ham, asparagus, sweet potatoes and apple pie. (OK, he didn't bake the pie :) ) He'd washed the dishes I'd left soaking in the sink and gone shopping. Oh, and fed the cats. I'd slept through all of it. I'd marry him if I hadn't already!

Sorry, I was in a dark mood yesterday and didn't feel happy about anything. Better now :)

Yesterday: Diz, a neighbor's cat, came over and twined around my legs while I was out gardening. He's a gorgeous brown tabby who makes friends with everyone, even dogs. Although he's shorthaired, his fur is really thick and plushy from all the time he spends outside, so petting him feels wonderful. When you pet him, he purrs loudly and huskily, like a mountain lion (or any other big cat that purrs instead of roaring). He cheers me up even when I don't want to be cheered up :)

Today: I cut back (well, pulled back) the apple geranium that was smothering the milkweed plants. I'm not worried about killing it; it's incredibly hardy, not to mention invasive, which is why I needed to reduce its size in the first place. Scented geraniums have small leaves and smaller flowers, but they make up for that with strong scents: apple, peppermint, pineapple, even chocolate. They also strew their seeds everywhere, so "volunteer" plants are always coming up -- even in pots. The scented oils get on your hands. So now, even after washing, my hands smell like apples. Yum!

Of the people I've tagged, so far, [livejournal.com profile] cassandraterra and [personal profile] vail_kagami are doing this meme. I'm not sure if [livejournal.com profile] azriona is going to, since she's done it before. And [livejournal.com profile] achuislemochroi is already doing something similar.

I was out puttering in the garden when I heard a high faint scream. I looked up and saw a red-tailed hawk that was being harassed by two crows. It looked like the hawk was trying to fly a little higher and catch a thermal that would allow it to soar higher than crows like to fly. But the crows wouldn't let it. They cawed and took turns dive-bombing the hawk. (This behavior is called "mobbing.") They probably weren't in any danger -- they're smaller and more maneuverable than a red-tail -- but when one of them got close enough, the hawk would spin upside down and lash out with its talons.

The crows looked like they were having a ball. The hawk, not so much. They chased it for a while and then one crow dropped out and flew back the way they'd come. A few seconds later the other one quit. I'm guessing they were chasing the hawk out of their territory. This time of year they could be nesting. I felt a little sorry for the hawk, but it was a lovely vignette of bird behavior.

Here are some links, if you're interested:

Very close photo of red-tail fighting off two crows.

I'm going to tag eight people by leaving a comment at their blog and linking back here. (I just learned what "tagging" means in this context.) To them and anyone else reading this: please participate, if you feel like it :)

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] t_eyla. What the heck, I've got a lot more WIPs than finished fics anyway.

Post a single sentence from each WIP you have. No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence!

I need a bigger head! )

[Error: unknown template qotd] [livejournal.com profile] cassandraterra  started it :)

The Dead Zone was brilliant in its first two seasons. Yes, I said brilliant. The third season was just very good. The fourth and fifth season were spotty -- the promise of the end of season three didn't quite materialize -- but the show was still good and seemed to be perfectly capable of getting back on track. But the sixth season was a disaster. The show didn't just "jump the shark." The shark pulled it under, ripped out its entrails, and flung it back to shore as a bloodless zombie of its former self. Its death was a relief.

Raines is one of the best shows ever made that never found its audience (except for me and Hubby and too few others). NBC didn't have a clue how to market it, so they advertised it as a slapstick comedy. It was so much more than that, and had so much promise, but it lasted one season. Jeff Goldblum gave it his all, and he may never have such a great role again. I'd buy it on DVD in a heartbeat (hint, hint).

Touching Evil, the American adaptation of the British series. One of the few American-inspired-by-British shows that actually improved on the original. Jeffrey Donovan has never been better (even on his current, and excellent, show, Burn Notice.)  The first and only season roughly followed the course of the complete British series, and it works as a stand-alone, but it would have been wonderful to see where the creators would have gone from there. I'd go for that DVD set too.

This meme seems to be all over the place, but I found it at this post on Wendymr's LJ. I'm going to comment there and link to this post, if I can make it work, that is ... Done.
