A Tale of Three Kitties

Guess what?
B and I are adopting the cats of a cousin of mine who sadly passed away several weeks ago. His sister (who lives in New Mexico) cleverly e-mailed me several photos of the trio while I was trying to decide if it was a good idea to do so. It worked.

Jillian (top), Rudy (center), and Jackson
Four-year-old Jackson and Jillian were taken in as feral kittens by my late cousin and his wife. They are inseparable.

Jillian is the shyer of the two. She likes to sleep on the very top of the cat tree.

With or without company.
Eight-year-old Rudy showed up as a tiny kitten stuck in a tree (the outdoor kind of tree).

Yes, that is a countertop. No, I don’t know how you get away with that…

Rudy: MY TUMMY, LET ME SHOW YOU IT
……well, that’s one way.
The cats are currently living at their ranch in the town of Coarsegold, which is about forty miles north of Fresno. We’ll be driving up next weekend for a rendezvous (the second part of a relay) to bring them back down…

I’ll have the orange tabby sandwich on tabby bread, with a mouse on the outside
…into our home, and into our hearts.
Photos are by my late cousin, except for the one of the boys in their boxes, which was taken by his sister.

Date: 2016-08-16 11:49 am (UTC)The poor cats had to stay in their home for about three months after my cousin had passed away (with daily visits from their trusted catsitter, of course) before we were able to collect them, but they had each other.
Rudy was 4 when he was presented with the kittens. He basically raised them, and they all clearly love each other. I call the siblings "the kids," as in Rudy's kids.
The kids don't ask or try to go out (they're perfectly happy to watch the world through the windows), but Rudy is trouble :) He kept slipping into the garage (the cats had regular garage access in their former home) and got out the door a few times before we developed some strategies to keep him in. It turned out my late cousin used to take him on supervised walks around their neighborhood. It's just not safe to do that here, and I don't trust him not to leap over the fence before I can get him. One night he slipped out the door and almost got through a hole in the fence before my husband grabbed him. Several cats in the neighborhood have been taken by coyotes, and not always after dark.
I'm thinking about a harness; if he'd accept it, I could try taking him out. But I don't know if he'd settle down or just try to get out even more. If he gets upset about staying in, I get an interactive toy and play with him for a while. Rudy's a big kitten at heart, and the entertainment distracts him and tires him out.
Looking at these photos again, I just realized that the kids are still kittens in the second one! Also, that's Jackson (a kitten there too) behind Rudy in the fourth one. No lynx-tipped ears, and the tail dangling behind the post is short-haired. I need to fix the captions.
Thank you for stopping by :)
