I once had to use books for a paper using the "special collection" at UK Library (20+ years ago). Even though I had to wear gloves, the smell was such a unique experience. Modern books can't compare to the smell of really, really old books.

Now I think the collection of old books are digitized so you don't have any physical contact with them. =(

This is a large part of why I love used bookstores. (Besides the ubiquitous cats.)

Also, the loft and attic of my mom's house smells of books. My father put up bookshelves on almost every wall, and of course filled them. My brother, sister and I (and later, my nieces) spent hours of our childhood up there, sitting on the floor next to one shelf -- or stack -- or another.
