Ganked from [personal profile] time_converges, who is on Day Two.

1. Post about something that made you happy today.
2. Repeat for eight days.
3. Tag eight people to do the same.

I was out puttering in the garden when I heard a high faint scream. I looked up and saw a red-tailed hawk that was being harassed by two crows. It looked like the hawk was trying to fly a little higher and catch a thermal that would allow it to soar higher than crows like to fly. But the crows wouldn't let it. They cawed and took turns dive-bombing the hawk. (This behavior is called "mobbing.") They probably weren't in any danger -- they're smaller and more maneuverable than a red-tail -- but when one of them got close enough, the hawk would spin upside down and lash out with its talons.

The crows looked like they were having a ball. The hawk, not so much. They chased it for a while and then one crow dropped out and flew back the way they'd come. A few seconds later the other one quit. I'm guessing they were chasing the hawk out of their territory. This time of year they could be nesting. I felt a little sorry for the hawk, but it was a lovely vignette of bird behavior.

Here are some links, if you're interested:

I'm going to tag eight people by leaving a comment at their blog and linking back here. (I just learned what "tagging" means in this context.) To them and anyone else reading this: please participate, if you feel like it :)
